Doctors
At the Department of Public Health (Gesundheitsamt) and at ara (AIDS-Hilfe Trier) they can help you to find the correct doctor for your illness. In Germany, it will essentially be the case that you will have a right to medical treatment if you are ill. You will normally require health insurance for this. If you are not insured and you are not able to pay a doctor’s bill, you will still be able to receive help.

Pharmacies (emergency service)
One of the many pharmacies in Trier will alway be open for emergencies (even at night and at the weekend). You will be able to ask in the hospital what emergency pharmacy is open. Or you can look online here.

Hospitals and ambulances
In an emergency, it is best if you go to the hospital. If you cannot go there yourself, call an ambulance on number 112. As it is a matter of an emergency, you will be treated even if you are not able to pay the bill.

Health insurance
In Germany, everyone has to take out health insurance. If you work as an employee, your employer will have to do this for you. If you are a self-employed sex worker, you will have to take out statutory or private health insurance. You will also be able to take insurance out in your home country and to apply for an EHIC (European health insurance card) to cover emergencies.

At the Department of Public Health (Gesundheitsamt) Trier-Saarburg and the ara (AIDS-Hilfe Trier) staff will answer your questions.

Health counselling
The Prostitute Protection Act (ProstSchG) obliges you to attend a health counselling session. In Trier and in the administrative district of Trier-Saarburg you attend the health counselling session at the Trier-Saarburg Department of Public Health (Gesundheitsamt Trier-Saarburg). If you are over 21 years of age you have to attend this counselling session once a year. If you are under 21 years of age you have to attend this counselling session twice a year. You may not legally work as a sex worker if you have not attended this health counselling session.

However, you can receive this health advice at the Department of Public Health (Gesundheitsamt) anonymously without stating your name, and also have yourself examined for sexually transmitted diseases.

You can also make use of this offer if you do not legally work as a prostitute. The Department of Public Health (Gesundheitsamt) may also not report you to the Police (Polizei) or the Public Order Office (Ordnungsamt). It may also not prohibit you from continuing to work.

However, the Department of Public Health (Gesundheitsamt) cannot issue you with any certification if you receive health advice anonymously. In order to register or extend your registration with the Public Order Office (Ordnungsamt), as demanded by the Protection of Prostitutes Act, but you require a certificate confirming you have received health advice.
