Questions & Answers
Do sex workers have to get themselves tested regularly for HIV?
No. Sex workers do have the option to get themselves tested for auf sexually transmitted diseases at the Department of Public Health (Gesundheitsamt), but have not had to do so for a long time now.
Sex in a brothel is safer than with a streetwalker, right?
You cannot really generalise it like that! There is an obligation to wear a condom with streetwalkers, too. Many streetwalkers are taking very good care of their health! And there are also women at a brothel who sometimes take liberties with condoms and health checks.
It isn’t true that all streetwalkers have pimps, and women at brothels never have any.
Where can I find help in case of emergency?
Some drop-in centres who will advise you in an unbiased, uncomplicated and anonymous manner:
- The advice centre for sex workers at the Department of Public Health (Gesundheitsamt)
- the punter surgery of the AIDS-Hilfe Trier
Both Department of Public Health and AIDS-Hilfe Trier cannot provide every aspect of help available, but they know which facilities you can turn to.
